I Can't Open It
Everytime I go over to my mom's, she's got a list of things for me to help her with.

This time she needed help with some Tylenol, Dental Floss and Shampoo.

A LESSON LEARNED
Many years ago when I was a stay-at-home mom I devoted a great deal of time to a fundraising organization. I held various positions, recording secretary, treasurer, chairperson of fund raising events and program chairman.

I got the most satisfaction being program chairman. It was my responsibity to arrange a program once a month, one that would entertain or educate the members. It was a challenge on many levels, the programs had to be ones that I felt the girls would enjoy with no cost to the group. Somehow I always came up with something.

We held our regular meetings monthly and opened the meetings with the singing of "God Bless America" followed by the business portion and then the entertainment for the evening. A few weeks before the meetings I would make a call to Estelle, our piano player, confirm the date, time and place.

Ok, so I call Estelle to give her the details of the upcoming meeting and she says,"It has been my pleasure working with you and now I feel it is time to give someone else the opportunity to play for the group!" Did you ever hear of such a nice way to say, "I have had it, I do not want to do it anymore."

That was an eye opener, I learned how to say "NO" with tact!

POTATO LATKES
A while ago Ronni from Time Goes By asked for a recipe for Potato Latkes, well here it is for all to enjoy!

Millie's Potato Latkes
6 Russet potatoes
1 onion
2 eggs, beaten

1/4 tsp. baking powder
salt and pepper to taste
3 tbsp flour or matzo meal

lemon juice

Peanut oil for frying

Peel and grate potatoes (I use the food processor) saves the fingers.

Pour off some of the water. Grate in the onion. Add beaten eggs and remaining ingredients. Add a little lemon juice to keep the potatoes from turning black.

Drop by tablespoon onto a preheated frying pan with about 1/4 inch of oil in the pan.

Turn and brown each side.

The secret of making latkes in advance is to fry them and remove them onto paper towels to drain, just for a few seconds. I then place them on a cookie sheet and freeze them.

When ready to serve, defrost the latkes, set oven at 400 degrees and heat until hot.

Whenever I make the latkes, I think of my mother who made them while her family sat and waited to eat them hot off the fry pan. I do not think paper towels were available in those days. She used a brown paper bag to drain the oil.

Does anyone remember that?

I also think of my husband Aaron who would work with me, he washed the bowls, utensils and the frypans. Working together made the job a lot easier.

Those were the days, my friends.

I'M BACK
It took less then three hours from West Palm, FL. to Boston, MA. but I can see that it will take me a lot longer to get my feet on the ground. My car was delivered on Saturday morning so now I have a lot of unpacking to do. What I say every year is, "I will take less next year." When I first start to pack I try to be selective and only pack what I will need for the winter season, when I finish I see that I have room in the car for a few more things, that is when I go off the trolley.

There are many details to take care off before and after the season, things like changing mailing addresses, stopping and starting telephone, same goes for the newspaper, disconnect cable, etc. etc. Those are things that I have to do. To make life easier I MUST Remember to take less clothes next season.

Now that I am back, in addition to what I have mentioned I have to find my way around the house, after all I have been gone four months so it will take me awhile to find where I put that good pot, where the knives are and where the light switches are!

TIMES, THEY ARE "A" CHANGING
For seniors who live in Florida this will probably be a familiar story:

Shirley and Helen meet at the supermarket and Shirley has some questions for her friend. "I heard you have a new boyfriend, that is wonderful."

Is he good looking?
Helen says, no.

Shirley asks, is he rich?
Helen says, no

Shirley asks, is he good in bed?
Helen says, no

So why are you going out with him?
Because he drives at night!!

That is a funny story but there is a lot of truth to it. Unfortunately times they are "a" changing and now I see that is starting to applied to women also. Some ladies never drove, some only drive in the daytime and more and more women are not driving at night.

So now the fellows ask, "Does SHE drive at night?"

My Mom's Blog has a new fan
Diva Marketing: Friday Fun: Diva Divine Modern Millie:
When was the last time you found a new blog and read every-single-post? (New blogs don't count.) Once, twice five times ever? I just read every-single-post on My Mom's Blog and like a good book, was disappointed that there were no more.
Yay mom!
