BREAKING the LAW TWICE
In a recent comment to me, Ronnie told the story about stealing ice chips from the iceman. That reminded me of something that I did when I was a teenager.

I was a huge fan of Glenn Miller and when his band came to Boston my friends and I went to see him on a Saturday afternoon but once was not enough.

We loved him so that we had to see him again. What we did was "skip school", go into town early in the day, bring lunch and stay for the day. We had already paid to get in the first time, on a Saturday, and money was tight but our desire was strong, so what we did was sneak in the back-door of the theatre to see him again.

By going in early and staying for the day we could gradually work our way down to the front row. The only problem with that was we had to see Henny Youngman many times until Miller came on, but it was worth it.

I still remember the thrill of hearing "Moonlight Serenade", the curtain opening up and there he was!!

We did it that once, my parents never knew, the school never knew but now that I think of it, maybe the theatre did know.

How To Stay Young
GEORGE CARLIN'S VIEWS ON AGING:
2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. ' An idle mind is the devil's workshop.'
Read them all.

THINKING ABOUT YESTERDAY and TODAY
I have been thinking about what my parents had to do to keep the home fires burning. When the weather was cold my dad had to go down to the cellar and put coals in the furnace, I think that was referred to as stoking the furnace. The stairs were rickety and if you went down early in the morning or late at night it was very dark. I never heard him complain, it had to be done and he did it.

In order to get things ready for breakfast, the first thing my mother did was take the milk in that was left at our back door by "the milkman". If is was cold out the milk had a head on it, the cream would come to the top, then she would bundle up and go across the street to the bakery and buy some fresh rolls. Once back home she would squeeze some fresh oranges with a green glass squeezer, then she would melt butter in a fry pan , add the beaten eggs and make wonderful scrambled eggs which my mother called a finechune, (I probably spelled that wrong) but no matter how you spell it, it was delicious.

Oh, I must tell you about the icebox, We had an "ice man" would deliver a chunk of ice to use when he saw the "ICE Card" in the window. It was my fathers responsibility to empty the pan periodically otherwise the kitchen floor would get flooded!

That was then.

Now, when I get up in the morning and there is a chill in the air I go to the thermostat and turn up the heat.

When I am not on the South Beach Diet I pour myself some orange juice and then make some oatmeal in the microwave. If I feel like having a piece of toast, take it out of the freezer, put it in the toaster oven and put on some margarine, heaven forbid, use butter. I know what Julia Child would say about that! The next thing I do is make a cup of coffee in my new Senseo Coffee Machine, it only takes 90 seconds. All this is done with the help of the thermostat, refigerator, freezer, toaster oven, microwave and coffee machine.

This is now!

COFFEE AND TEMPTATION
I just finished a delicious piece of apple pie a la mode. It is very unusual that I would have a pie in the house as I am only one person and very rarely have any goodies like that available because if I have it around I would eat it.

Well, you ask, how come you had a pie in the house? I'll tell you - I was at the supermarket the other day and at this particular market they have coffee available to their customers. It was 3:00 P.M. and that is my "slump time." Needed a fix. Wouldn't you know that right near the coffee area they have the most delicious looking pastries, but I just feasted my eyes.

As I was drinking my coffee I saw that they had apple pies on sale for only $1.95 and they looked good! Well I bought one and have been enjoying it ever since. And how can you have pie without ice cream!

That market knows how to increase their sales, that's called good merchandising, and it worked on me.

THE CALENDER
For many years I have been using a large desk calender since I write big and I need a lot of space to make my notes. I do not like to be in small closed in spaces and I feel the same way about my calender. I even take it to Florida with me because I have more activities there and really need a lot of space.

I recently got a printer and the best place for it is right beside the computer. Well that is were the calender was so I had to move it to an inconvenient location. What to do? Well maybe it was time to try making my notations on a smaller calender, so I got my hands on one and made my first notation, Donor luncheon on Thurday, September 9th at 12 noon. Did not make that note on my large desk calender but out of habit did not look at new small one.

Fortunatly got a call from a friend who spoke about getting together with me for the Donor luncheon on Thursday. What! I did not see it on the big calender and forgot all about it.

Well you know what is going to happen now, getting rid of the small calender and back to my old big one. Old habits are hard to break and as the old saying goes, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks!"

How do you break an old habit?
