Searching for Baby Dimples
I read my mom's last post and was interested in the doll she mentioned.

So we both went on Google to see if we could find the exact doll that she so fondly remembered owning as a child. We found her!

It's Baby Dimples, 22 inches, a popular dimpled baby introduced in 1927.

I laughed when I read that last post becuase my mom neglected to tell you about her other toys. I guess they don't hold as pleasant memories as Baby Dimples.

First there were her roller skates, or maybe I should say roller skate. Her parents were very protective of her and didn't want her to get hurt, so they took one of her roller skates away and left her with just one for one foot!

I guess if you always can put one foot on the ground it's safer than having a set of wheels on that other foot.

The other story I remember her telling us was about her sled. When her father took the sled home he noticed that the front part of it was loose. It seemed to him that the wooden part on the front needed to be tightened up, so he secured it to the base of the sled so it wouldn't move anymore. That fixed it.

A KID AGAIN
Saturday night did the usual thing with "The Girls", dinner and a movie, but this time we decided to go to Friendly's after the movie. It was a hot night and we said , the heck with the calories, lets go for it! A senior sundae is $1.49, it comes with chocolate or carmel sauce, whip cream and a cherry on top. We all decided to have Velvet Praline ice cream with the works! Was that ever good!

While we were waiting for our sundaes I noticed there was a can of crayons and a paper to color on, well it did not take me but a second to start coloring. What Fun! There were five of us and only one other girl joined me in my pursuit. What does that tell you about the other girls?

Well one thing lead to another and before I knew it we were talking about our childhood and the toys we had growing up.

The things I remember most are my big, beautiful blue eyed, blonde doll, table and chairs and a tea set. I did not have much but I loved what I had.

The children today have way to many "things" and do not appreciate what they have. I was lucky, valued and loved what I had.

I HAVE A NEW COFFEE MACHINE
Here I am writing about coffee again. I had a birthday last week and my son and daughter in-law gave me a Senseo Coffee Machine. With this product you can have a perfect cup of coffee every time. You can make one cup, two cups or one mug in just a few seconds. Another great feature about this coffemaker is there's no pot to wash, you just have to rinse the coffee pod holder.

So far I have tried making one cup, and find that's not enough. Tried making 1 mug and that's fine. I'm also trying the different flavors, mild roast, medium roast, dark roast and decaffeinated. I even tried using one decaffeinated pod and one mild roast pod. I should mention that when you make a mug you need to use two pods. As a matter of fact this morning tried just one pod for one mug and that was too weak.

As you can see I am having a great adventure with these new fangeled machine. This is how I bring fun and excitment into my life! After all what kind of excitment can a 79 year old lady have?

Do any of you out there have the Senseo Machine and if so how do you like it?

How to put a link on someone's mail
My mom wanted me to look an interesting web page, but didn't know how to send it to me.

I tried to tell her how to copy and paste the link, but she hasn't learned copy and paste yet.

So I figured out an easier way to do it on the Mac, you just click on the URL and drag it into the body of your email.

It's easy to say, but harder to do if you're 79 years old and an internet newbie.

The problem was that when you are viewing the web page, your email is hidden.

You've got to be able to view two windows at a time to be able to drag and drop the URL from one to the other.

Getting two windows on the screen at the same time requires you to click on the title bar of the browser window and drag it down until the email window is visible.

Then you can click on the URL and drag it into the body of your email.

This took a visit over to my Mom's to explain.

Now she can show you how to do it on her new video blog entry, How to put a link on someone's mail: The Movie [ QuickTime 2.8 MB ]

MORE ABOUT COFFEE
Have you been watching "The Last Comic Standing?" I have been watching the show because Gary Gulman is a local boy who has been in the business for many years. He is very funny, handsome, and Jewish!

A lot of his routines have to do with cookies, for example he says, on Fig Newtons: "It's a pretty bold move to dedicate your entire product line to the fig, of all fruits." He really pulls it off.

So, you ask what has that got to do with coffee? He talks a lot about cookies, I talk a lot about coffee. That's some segue!

The supermarket that I shop in has a Dunkin Donuts concession. It was about three o'clock, and I needed a pick me up, so I ordered a senior cup of coffee and a side of milk. The cashier said there was no senior discount and charged me $1.55.

What! Why? No senior discount and 25 cents for the milk! I questioned the cashier about the milk charge and he told me that he was instructed to charge extra for the milk, so I told him to forget the milk, it was the principle of the thing.

What I found out a long time ago is that even if you go to the same supermarket chain, it depends on where the store is located what they charge for the product.

Apprently that is true with the donut shop too, because when I have gone to a free standing shop I get the senior discount and there is no charge for the milk.

Looks like it is time for me and Gulman to go out for cookies and a cup of coffee!

Hey Gary, Call me.

A GOOD QUESTION
The other day I rode by the house that we lived in for 38 years and saw a for sale sign out on the front lawn. "Our House" looked well taken care of , the front lawn and the shrubs looked great, the house is now a soft yellow with black shutters, nice new front door and a shinny new mail box. Three years after my husband died I put the house up for sale and so the new owners have only been living there for seven years. I wonder why they have put it up for sale after living there for such a short time.

I told my son Steve that I saw "Our House" up for sale and his question to me was, If the real estate agent has an open house would you want to go? Good question! I asked him the same question and his reaction was the same as mine. --- Let's think about it.

We had many good times there, dinner parties, holiday get togethers, card games, mah jongg games, cook outs and pool parties, even though the pool was only three feet high, we all had many good times keeping cool in the pool.

Just seeing the house got me thinking about the fun times we shared, maybe I should leave it at that.

What would you do?

UPDATE from Steve:
Hey Mom! There's an open house today. I just saw the listing in the Boston Globe and there's a link to the realtor's web page WITH A PHOTO SLIDESHOW.

Oh my! I just clicked that link and see the pictures of "Our House". Yikes! It's a living nightmare. The guys from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy would have a field day over there.

I've got to give them credit for one thing though, they put a TV in the livingroom!

COFFEE and CHAIRPADS
I went to a new supermarket the other day and could not find the coffee aisle. Asked the person on the floor "Where can I find coffee?" He said "In the coffee aisle" Would you believe that!

That reminds me of the time I was renting a condo in Florida and the kitchen chairs were very uncomfortable so I went looking for chairpads. Looked in many different stores and could not find any. I finally said to myself, "I have a good idea, will look in a supermarket, they sell everything."

Found a senior citizen floor walker and told him what I was looking for, he looked at me blankly and then brighten up and said, "Aisle 3." I was so happy, I was finally going to get my chairpads.

Wait a minute, when I got to Aisle 3 what did I find there but Kotex Pads!

He tried!

I WAS JUST THINKING
Awhile ago I made a post to my blog, "I WAS WONDERING.".

Today I was just thinking about all the men in my life. Now lets see -----

I have an internist in MA, an internist in FL.

I have a periodontist in MA and one in FL.

I have a pediotrist in MA and one in FL.

I also have a gynecologist, gastroenternologist, oncologist, optician, dentist and an opthomologist.

In the Jewish religion you have to have ten men for a minyan. I have more than enough!

If I could get all these men together, I could get a group rate at the theatre!

A Laugh And A Haircut
Remember the saying "A Shave and a Haircut, 2 bits, well yesterday I had a "Laugh and a Haircut." Cost me a lot more then 2 bits!

Got to talking to my hairdresser and she told me that her husband just had cataract surgery and his eyesight has improved greatly. That brought to mind that I will be seeing my opthomologist in October, he has been watching my cataracts over the years. I have a feeling that it is time for surgery.

We also talked about housework, and I mentioned that my bedroom gets very dusty but my living room does not. Not that I do anything about the dust.

Her response to that was "after you have the cataract surgery you will be able to see the dust in the living room too"

GREAT!

What a laugh we had.

Time Goes By - What it's really like to get older
Ronni Bennett writes about my mom on her blog, Time Goes By - What it's really like to get older:
The tagline on My Mom's Blog is 'Thoroughly Modern Millie' and she will be 79 years old later this month. Millie Garfield is billed as the Internet's oldest blogger and what I like best about My Mom's Blog is that while Millie covers a wide variety of topics - from movies to Mah Jongg to politics to dieting and even a little marriage counseling - she also tells us what it's like to be her age.
It's a great post that says a lot about my mom.

My Mom's First Video Blog Post
I went to the supermarket, with my mom, to see what she was talking about in her last post.

She'd thrown away the Nescafe coffee jar, so we went over to the local Shaws to see what the problem was with their packaging.

When we got to the coffee isle we saw that Nescafe had already changed their packaging TWICE.

My mom explains it all in her first video blog post: No Coffee: The Movie [ QuickTime 3.4 MB ]

NO MORNING COFFEE!
I do not know about you but I need to have my morning coffee. The other morning I had to open a new jar of Nescafe coffee. It was in a new fangled container. Directions printed on jar said, "Press Here", well I "Pressed Here" and nothing happened and as I looked closer I saw right above the "Press Here", the words "Press" soo I pressed there and again nothing happened - by this point I was really upset because I could not open the jar and therefore I could not have that much needed cup of coffee.

What to do? I made myself a cup of TEA - yuck! - As soon as I finished the tea, got on the phone and called the Nescafe 800 number and gave them an earfull. The customer service person told me that I had to put the container on the counter and with two thumbs press down and then open the lid! How do they expect a 78 year old lady who has poor eyesight and arthritis to do that!

They will report my complain and send me some complimentry coupons. What good is that. If they keep putting the coffee in that type of container i am not buying it.

When I finally was able to open the jar I transfered the coffee to a plastic container. Now I can be sure that I will have that cup of coffee in the morning!

Millie

PS: After I made this post thought of a short story that I read years ago about a fella and his girfriend. He was ready to get married, she was not. One morning she had trouble opening a jar and cried bitterly. She called her fella and said, "I am ready, lets get married!"
